Flowcrete MD Secures International Business Oscar
The managing director of Cheshire-based specialist flooring manufacturer Flowcrete has been awarded a prestigious international accolade from the Institute of Directors (IoD).
Mark Greaves secured the UKTI International Award at the annual Institute of Directors (IoD) North West Director of the Year Awards, held at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester. The ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Nicholas Owen.
Since joining Flowcrete in 1989, Mark has taken the business from its Cheshire roots and established it as a major global player – with sales offices in 29 countries and eight manufacturing centres of excellence around the world, sales turnover has grown from £400,000 in 1989 to £55 million last year.
As a result, Mark is well tuned to international business practice, from doing deals in China and the Far East, the Middle East, Australasia, the USA, South America, Europe and Africa.
He has personally overseen some of Flowcrete’s largest deals, including the awards of more than 500,000 square metres of flooring at two of the largest airport projects in the world – Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong and KLIA in Malaysia. More recently the company has floored the new Wembley Stadium, Soccer City in Johannesburg and the new Stratford City shopping centre in London. The company’s international success was reinforced in 2009 when it secured the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, in the International Trade category.
Ann Jordan, regional chair for the IoD in the North West, said: "It is still a tough economic environment, and the calibre of businesses and individual directors in this year’s shortlist are great examples of the type of businesses that are driving the recovery, not only in this region, but across the UK, and further abroad."
Across the globe, Mark has combined an entrepreneurial approach with innovation to pioneer new concepts within the flooring industry, including anti microbial systems capable of fighting MRSA.
He has also pioneered new measures with consideration to the environment, including solvent-free products and methods of delivering products on site in recyclable containers.
Earlier this year, Flowcrete reinforced its commitment to the North West economy with the opening of its new multi-million pound international headquarters, built using the latest ‘green’ construction techniques at the company’s existing site in Sandbach, Cheshire.
Mark, who lives on the outskirts of Prestbury, said: “I’m delighted and honoured to have received this award on behalf of the fantasitc team we have at Flowcrete.”
Mark joined Flowcrete in the 1989 after four years with Shell International, He studied at Manchester Business School (MBS) where achieved an MBA with Distinction and also has a degree in Medieval English from Bristol University.
